Zoning Code Enforcement

In California, zoning codes are usually enforced by complaint only. This means that zoning violations are only investigated if someone notices them and files a complaint. Typical violations include conducting a business out of a home without a license, outdoor storage of construction material, abandoned cars, and construction without a permit.

Once a complaint has been made, the primary goal of code enforcement is to bring the matter into compliance. You are given a certain amount of time to bring the matter into compliance before a notice of violation is filed; in most cases, you are also entitled to an internal hearing before a code enforcement supervisor. If the matter is not brought into compliance, you may have to go to court.
