If you are an immigrant who intends to remain in the U.S. permanently, you may want to consider applying for U.S. citizenship.

Permanent residents are granted a green card that allows them to stay in the U.S., but without all the benefits of citizenship: they are not allowed to vote or hold public office. In addition, if a permanent resident violates certain criminal or immigration laws or is deemed to have abandoned U.S. residence, his or her green card can be taken away.

Usually, a person must hold a green card for a specified time period before applying for citizenship, but once granted, citizenship cannot be revoked in most cases.
